The CRIDEX DAMPING BAR, similar in appearance to our TF Indexable Insert Boring Bars, actually performs a vastly different function. It absorbs energy by transferring motion between the vibrating outer shell and the internal free floating, spring loaded mass assembly. Absorbed energy is converted to controlled friction. The inertia effect of the high-density mass makes it tend to remain stationary during high frequency vibrations, thereby stabilizing the entire bar assembly and most importantly, the cutting tool itself.

Boring ratios of 8 to 1 are common practice with these chatter-free bars -- and in many cases a ratio of 12 to 1 has been reported.

The damping mass encapsulated in the front end of the Cridex bars is excited into resonance only when there is adequate length to create vibration. Shortening the overall length does, to some degree, restrict this vibration, resulting in less than optimum performance. Therefore, we do not generally recommend it. However, if a shorter bar is required, the amount of removal should be held to a minimum.

The " mass" cavity takes up roughly 1/3rd the front end of the bar. Therefore, set screws or other clamping devices, therefore, should never be used in this area. Here, clamping could jam the mass, rendering it useless.

With the proper use, these unique bars will give many years of satisfactory service. Mistreatment such as dropping them on the floor or striking them with a hammer could deform the lead mass, resulting in poor performance. Should repairs be required, they must be made at the factory.

The LF Series of Cridex bars are used for bottoming and facing or boring to a square shoulder. Price of the bar includes carbide insert and chip breaker. The inserts used in this bar are industry standards. Bars are supplied with C-6 grade carbide inserts. C-2 grade is available upon request.
